Need Encouragement? Thinking of exiting public school? Want your school board to support parents' rights?
I’m writing with some help for those wanting a little more information about how to exit schools due to onerous mandates and for those who choose to stay but want to make a difference with your local school board.
I have lived in my city, Costa Mesa, Ca. for 50 years this year and I have been an activist since my oldest was in pre-k. I ran for school board in 1989, lost, and ran again in 1994. I won by the grace of God and an effective grassroots campaign. My school board colleagues were so tired of me asking pertinent questions about textbooks, budgets, etc. during meetings, (I did my homework), promoting abstinence and the discussion of the theory of intelligent design with the theory of evolution, factual history (not revisionism) and opposing inappropriate books… that they found someone to run against me, and I lost my seat in 2002.
Which was ok. 8 years is enough! I needed to help my sister care for our parents, so losing was fine.
I served on the city parks commission, was voted chairman, and recruited to run for city council in 2006.
I was re-elected in 2010 and termed out in 2014. In Costa Mesa we had several people on the council seeking higher office so their votes on local issues did not bode well for the citizens. But we survived and now they are, hopefully, focused on other ways to get elected to higher offices.
I am still an activist because I can help encourage moms who want to home school and teach others how to lobby public officials. (I home schooled my kids for a few years in the 80’s). I know the “back rooms” of the school board and the city council and how to effectively lobby both agencies and officials.
I have a California teaching credential and I still teach part-time at a psych hospital where teens come because they have tried to commit suicide, are very depressed, cutting, etc.
